Teacher's Corner

The New Americans Museum was founded to celebrate the achievements of immigrants and to assist immigrants in America to fully realize their potential and responsibilities as citizens of our democracy. To this end, the Museum is developing a set of new classroom lessons to promote understanding of contemporary History and Social Science (HSS) for adult and secondary school students participating in English Language Learner classes.
Discovering Voices Of America is a curriculum project designed for new Americans. One key aspect will be an opportunity to learn and appreciate the defining moments in the United States. Through the use of these resources, an increased understanding of pivotal moments and key concepts that help shape U.S. history and define who we are and what this country has to offer and engage.
Discovering Voices Of America will develop as a curriculum resource to correspond to Content Standards across-the-curriculum. These innovative resources provide teachers with the opportunity to enrich their curriculum.
Discovering Voices Of America is a collaboration between educators, writers, academic institutions, and the community. It aims to create resources that will include professional development for educators, printed materials, and web-based materials.
Teacher Participation
Curriculum specialists and teachers have been engaged to design, implement and evaluate a series of lessons based on the selected vignettes. Teachers in San Diego will pilot the above mentioned standards based curriculum in classrooms, evaluating the impact on learners.
Student Outcomes
Learners will reflect upon the history of the United States and the role their family will play in the future society of America. Students will recognize that they have rights and responsibilities as residents of this country.
Connecting the Community
The English Learner lessons will act as a catalyst for students to encourage civic participation as well as learn rights and responsibilities. Partners will include student, educational institutions, teachers, community leaders, and the writing community. The Museum and Learning Center invites members of the community to join us as we work together to continue the tradition and privilege of civic participation in our country.
